'I know just the place.' Fliss drove carefully down the drive, avoiding potholes, and turned left into the lane. 'We'll go to Shipley Bridge. I don't think you've ever been there. It's wonderful in the early summer when the rhododendrons are out but it's lovely at this time of the year, too...'
It is nearly thirty years after Fliss, Mole and Susannah arrived in Devon from Kenya and much has changed since then. However, The Keep remains a sanctuary for the whole family:warm, unchanging, filled with love.
Now mistress of The Keep, Fliss finds it hard to fill the place of her beloved Grandmother, especially as she has many doubts about her own life. Mole has settled into his second family—the navy—and Susannah, always the baby, is now a wife and mother herself.
