Oxford Literary Festival 2008

By Rodney Willett

Marcia’s event was scheduled for noon on Sunday, 6th April. We spent the previous night in Corpus Christi. To our astonishment, woke up to a white world.

After a wonderful full English breakfast with all the trimmings - and some lively conversation - which we enjoyed in the college hall, it was time to make our way to Christ Church and the green room where Marcia was to meet Meg Rosoff - with whom she was to share the platform, and Lucy Atkins of the Sunday Times who was to chair the event
Although Meg Rosiff, award winning novelist, comes from Boston U.S.A., she now lives in England and has done for many years.

Both writers were supposed to be talking about the influence that place has on their novels and of course they did. However, when they discovered that they both came from a large family of girls (Marcia is one of five and Meg one of four) and that in both cases two of their sisters had breast cancer, the discussion soon ranged far and wide.
We were both very touched to meet some of Marcia’s fans who made great efforts to come to hear her. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to put faces to people who we felt we already knew quite well following years of e-mails flying backwards and forwards.
